Uncertainty pervades the camps of major politicians in Adamawa State following the expiration of the tenure of Local Government chairmen.
The uncertainty is because there has been no word from the authorities over the conduct of fresh elections to elect chairmen and councilors to pilot the affairs of the local councils.
The state government is also silent on if there will be caretaker committees in place as it only issued a directive for the hitherto chairmen to vacate office and hand over to the Head of Service of their respective local government.
Accordingly, there have been agitations in the camps of opposition parties over the seeming vacuum in the leadership at the third tier of government.
For instance, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who pleaded to remain anonymous, alleged a plot by the authorities to turn Adamawa into one-party system, claiming that, “whenever we bring up the matter of local government election, they always sweep it under the carpet.”
The situation has trigged a major crisis in the state Labour Party, with some of the leaders accused of sellout by allegedly colluding with the ruling PDP to have their ways due to the latter promise to reward them with political appointments.
There is no chairman for the Adamawa State Electoral Commission (ASEC) or permanent secretary in charge of the office.
Even one of the chairmen who has just left office said he was confused on whether to start galvanizing support to seek re-election because there was no evidence that the authorities had an immediate plan to conduct the LG poll.
The ex-chairman said: “I have just finished my tenure as an elected chairman, I don’t know if I should start campaigning or I will be appointed as caretaker committee chairman.”
