Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists the club is financially strong enough to pursue Nico Williams from Athletic Club, despite contrary reports. Williams had an impressive 2023/24 season at club level and has continued his form into Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign, playing a pivotal role in their journey to the semi-finals.
There has been speculation in the Catalan media about a potential transfer to Barcelona this summer, with Spain teammate Lamine Yamal even discussing the prospect of playing alongside Williams in La Liga.
Despite Barcelona’s well-documented financial challenges in recent years, including suggestions that they may need to sell key players to fund significant transfers, Laporta told Catalunya Radio that the club could afford Williams, whose release clause stands at €50m, if they decide to proceed with the move.
When asked about the availability of funds to acquire the skilled winger, Laporta responded, “As of today, yes. It’s the result of several years of hard work to reach this point where we can contemplate a signing of this magnitude.
“These past three years have been intense with many tasks, but we’ve managed them well and are pleased with our progress as the club’s finances recover. We anticipate positive news soon in this regard.
“We are focused on confirming the club’s economic revival, and there are ongoing operations that we’ve diligently pursued and will announce shortly. It’s gratifying to conclude this three-year process, and we look forward to returning to normality.”
In addition to Nico Williams, Barcelona has set their sights on another Spanish international. According to 90min, discussions are underway with RB Leipzig regarding a potential €60m transfer for Dani Olmo.
