After two years as governor, the administration led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has finally announced its intention to conduct local government elections in Anambra State.
The State Independent Electoral Commission made this announcement in a press statement on Monday.
A week ago, Soludo inaugurated the members of the commission, urging them to ensure that Anambra has clean and credible polls.
In Monday’s press statement, signed by the Chairman of ANSIEC, Genevieve C. Osakwe Esq., the commission stated that the election would be held on September 28.
She said, “The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered political parties and the general public that local government elections in the state will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

“Election timetable/schedule of activities and other details can be collected from the headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, starting Wednesday, 14th August 2024.”
This announcement comes after years of agitation by civil society groups, politicians, and journalists in the state, who called on Soludo to honor his promise made during the election campaign to conduct the election.
The last local government election in the state was held in 2013, during the twilight of the administration of former governor Mr. Peter Obi.
