A Sokoto-based youth group has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive actions against foreign government interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
The group, “Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement” in a press statement signed by its coordinator, Mustapha Buda, and made available to newsmen on Friday said in any thriving democracy, the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental pillar, empowering citizens to voice their concerns, advocate for change, and hold their leaders accountable.
“For Nigerians, this right is enshrined in the constitution and reflects our commitment to democratic values and freedoms.
“Peaceful protest is not merely a right but a vital expression of our collective will and an essential mechanism for societal progress. It allows us to address grievances, and foster dialogue within a framework of respect and non-violence.
“Upholding this right is crucial for ensuring that Nigeria remains a vibrant and participatory democracy where the voices of its people can be heard and acted upon without fear of foreign interference”.
The statement further said in the just concluded national protest, “foreign flags were prominently displayed, raising serious concerns about attempts by foreign entities to destabilize our nation as they did for Libya, Sudan, and others.
“The SYPM strongly condemns any form of external interference that undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and the democratic rights of its citizens. The display of foreign flags during a domestic protest and the arrest of foreign nationals by security agencies confirm our fears.
“This is not only disrespectful but also indicative of a larger, troubling trend of foreign actors seeking to manipulate and destabilize our nation for their selfish agendas.
“Our Demands In light of these events, SYPM urgently calls upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action by Identifying and prosecuting those foreign individuals and organizations found to be involved in these destabilizing activities.
“It is crucial to frown at the activities of foreign governments and hold foreign agents accountable, particularly those who are actively working against Nigeria’s stability and sovereignty.
“Formally address this issue with the governments of the countries whose nationals were involved in Nigeria’s internal affairs. It is essential to send a clear message to the international community that Nigeria will not tolerate foreign interference in its internal affairs”
The group calls for enhanced security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future by engaging in rigorous monitoring and regulation of foreign entities operating within our borders to ensure they respect Nigerian laws and values.
The SYPM believes that Nigeria is a sovereign nation with the right to manage its affairs without external pressure or interference.
“The recent protest demonstrated the strength and unity of our people, and we must protect this democratic spirit from being undermined by foreign influences.
“The SYPM, stands firm in our commitment to a stable, secure, and self-determined Nigeria”.
The statement however urges all citizens and leaders to remain vigilant and united in the face of any attempts to disrupt the national integrity.
