As Edo State prepares for the gubernatorial election on September 21, 2024, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo has expressed confidence that the electorate will reject the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, whom he describes as mediocre and incompetent.
Speaking at the PDP’s official campaign flag-off in Ubiaja, Esan South-East Local Government Area, Ighodalo promised to build on the developmental legacies of the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki and enhance the socio-economic well-being of Edo residents if elected.
Ighodalo praised Governor Obaseki for laying a solid foundation for digital and good governance, referring to him as a “developmental bricklayer.” He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing sectors such as security, education, health, and public welfare, asserting that Edo State has regained its prominence in palm produce under the current administration.

Governor Obaseki endorsed Ighodalo, highlighting his dedication to democracy and his genuine concern for the people. “Ighodalo has sacrificed much, driven by a true love for his people, not for money or fame,” Obaseki stated. He criticized the current opposition candidate, suggesting that if the EdoBEST program had been implemented earlier, it would have produced more competent candidates.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and PDP national leader High Chief Tom Ikimi called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to ensure a fair election environment for all parties involved.
Other notable speakers at the campaign event included Clifford Inegbedion, Chairman of Edo Central PDP Local Government Chairmen; High Chief Francis Inegbeneki; Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, wife of the Governor; and Hon. Marcus Ononbun.
The event underscored Ighodalo’s commitment to continuing and expanding upon the developmental progress made by the outgoing administration and solidified his position as a strong contender in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
