Six months before the local government elections in Osun State, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) announced that it will inaugurate a high-level Certificates and Documents Verification Committee for candidates vying for local government and councillorship positions on Monday, with the aim of ensuring a credible exercise.

The Press Secretary to the OSSIEC Chairman, Mr. Omoniyi Badru, made this known in a statement in Osogbo. He said the committee is expected to be inaugurated by the Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Hazeem Abioye, at the commission’s headquarters in the Testing Ground Area of Osogbo.

According to Mr Badru, the certificates and documents submitted by candidates from various political parties contesting for the chairmanship and councillorship positions in next year’s local government elections will be verified by a 15-member committee headed by a retired senior staff member from the National Population Commission, Alhaji Abdulateef Olayanyu.

The statement added, “The committee is expected to be co-headed by a retired banker and fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mr. Kazeem Adeniyi Olatokun, while a legal practitioner, Mrs Iyabo Olaniyi, will serve as Secretary of the committee.”

“Other members of the committee include Mr Abiola Amure, Mrs Hanifat Adediran, Mrs Temitope Onifade, Mr Tajudeen Badejoko, Mrs Abolaji Atolagbe, Mr Wasiu Adebayo, Mrs Rofiat Babatunde, and Mr Hamzat Olajide.”

“Representatives of the Osun State Internal Revenue Service will also serve on the committee, while the Secretary of the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, will represent the union on the committee,” he concluded.
