England interim manager Lee Carsley has expressed confidence in his ability to take on the role permanently following the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland.
Carsley, who was previously the England Under-21 manager, stepped up to lead the senior team after Gareth Southgate’s departure post-Euro 2024, while the Football Association searches for a permanent replacement.
The win, secured by goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, was a promising start for Carsley, who admitted the result provided a much-needed confidence boost.
“In the back of my mind, I always thought it would be easier to be the England manager from the sidelines, but there have been moments where I questioned if I could do it,” Carsley confessed. “However, this win has improved my confidence and that of the staff. It reassures us that we’re in a good place.”
Carsley acknowledged that doubts are natural, recalling his concerns before the Under-21s’ Euro campaign. “With experience, dealing with setbacks and having a good support system makes it easier. I feel positive about where we stand with the players.”
While speculation continues regarding the next permanent England manager, with names like Graham Potter and Eddie Howe also mentioned, Carsley emphasized his strong relationship with the FA. He shared that technical director John McDermott congratulated him and stressed the importance of securing a win against Finland on Tuesday at Wembley.
