The Federal Government, through Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), has disclosed that 1,000 kits and cylinders are already being distributed across the country.
This is coming days after President Bola Tinubu ordered the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles involved in transporting people, food, and goods and available price for N230/litre gas.
The initiative which offers a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, currently sells for over N900 per litre.
The initiative seeks to provide relief to Nigerians by promoting the use of CNG as a cleaner and more affordable alternative to fuel.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, at NIPCO- CNG facility in Ogun State, a representative of the P-CNGi, Mr Moses Onate, stated that there are approximately 10 CNG conversion centres in Lagos.
Onate stated that the cost of CNG is lower than the current price of petrol in the country, noting that, “Currently, we are cataloging the 1,000 kits and cylinders we intend to distribute across the country.
“Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Abuja, and Oyo State are the targeted areas. As of this morning, 450 kits have already been sent to Kaduna and Abuja. An additional 550 kits will be distributed today to Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun State.
“Fuel prices are now around N1,000 per liter, while CNG costs between N210 and N230. The difference in cost between fuel and CNG will have a significant positive impact. If Nigerian factors do not affect the situation, everyone will benefit from using CNG in the long run.”
Speaking also, an Engineer with NIPCO, Nwaodu Austin Chinedu, confirmed that the company’s warehouse is consistently stocked and distribution has been going on smoothly across the country.
Chinedu said the partnership between NIPCO and the Agency has provided the public the opportunity to facilitate vehicle conversion opportunities.
Also speaking P-CNGi CEO, Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, stated that the programme aims for the highest global vehicle conversions, identifying 2,000 workshops nationwide, with 123 already selected.
