Ethio Telecom has rolled out the commercial fifth-generation (5G) network services in Addis Ababa.
The telecom network operator introduced 5G service in May 2022 as a trial service first in the capital, and then in Adama city.
“We are delighted to announce the official launch of the state-of-the-art 5G network,” the company said on Sunday.
The 5G service has now been commercialized at 145 different sites in Addis Ababa.
“This groundbreaking technology promises to revolutionize society and business activities, as a gift of the new year,” the telecom notes.
The launch is part of the telco’s new annual business plan that aims to expand networks amid growing demand for data and internet services. The number of its data and internet subscribers is projected to grow by 21% to 41.17 million this year from 33.9 million.
The 5G network offers the fastest speeds of up to 10 Gbps, low latency (less than 1 ms), and massive communication capability – up to a million connections within one km2.
The “5G will have a significant impact on” industries such as mission-critical services requiring real-time decisions, manufacturing plants, and remote healthcare, according to the state-owned telco.
The telecom has made several packages available to its customers including unlimited 5G data, 5G To The Home, and a variety of 5G mobile packages.
