The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) decorated two honorary marshals and 24 eminent marshals on Friday for their unwavering dedication to reducing road traffic accidents.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mr Dauda Biu, who was represented by Corp. Commander Anthony Uchenna, expressed admiration and poured accolades on the Special Marshals during the 2023 Cross River State Special Marshal Sectoral Workshop held in Calabar.
“I am indeed deeply moved and pleased to see the spirit, motivation, determination, and enthusiasm of the Special Marshals of this command in this mission of curbing or reducing road traffic crashes in Nigeria.
He tasked special marshals in the country with exhibiting the highest level of discipline and professionalism towards eradicating road accidents in line with the best global practices.
“There is a need to always review our activities and analyse the impacts of these activities on the reduction of crashes on Nigerian roads. A road traffic crash is not an accident. It is the result of the actions or inactions of human beings. It is therefore preventable. Rood safety advocacy is not for the Federal Road Safety Corps alone; rather, it is a shared responsibility involving all of us, he said.
On his part, Zonal Commanding Officer RS6, Assistant Corp Marshal, Johnathan Owoade, noted that the central theme of the workshop “Volunteerism in Road Safety Management: Limits and Possibilities”, was quite apt considering the forthcoming festive season.
“The significance of this workshop is to rejig and to get ourselves prepared for the ‘Ember Months’. We are here to appreciate those who have contributed meaningfully to the Corps. We call them Special Marshals; don’t forget, they are doing it voluntarily; nobody pays them; they are using their money, resources, time, and all God-given talent to save lives on the highway.
The Sector Commander RS6.2, Cross River Sector Command, CC Istifanus Ibrahim, expressed optimism that, at the end of the workshop, the Special Marshals fold in RS6.2 Cross River and its component commands will be equipped adequately to offer quality service to humanity.
The State Coordinator of the Special Marshal, Elder Akonjor Akonjor, maintained that the humongous achievements of the Special Marshals over the years speak volumes about their contributions to complement the efforts of the FRSC.
He highlighted some of the command’s achievements, among which were the building of the administration block, the building of a multi-purpose hall with offices, the building of a staff canteen, which generates income for the command, the purchase of a band set for the command, and assisting the NYSC Road Safety Club.
Speaking at the sidelines of the workshop, one of the Special Marshals who was decorated as ‘Honorary Marshal’, Mr Etim Okon, thanked the Corps for acknowledging his selfless contribution and noted that “it is a call to do more”.
The workshop also featured award presentations and lectures that focused on effective strategies for minimising road crashes and ensuring safer roads for all.
