The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command says the war against illicit drugs and trafficking in Nigeria is yielding positive results.
The Commander of Narcotics (CN) FCT commander, Kabir Tsakuwa, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
Tsakuwa stated that the federal government has been taking significant steps to ensure the country is free from illicit drug abuse and trafficking through all three arms of government.
He mentioned that approximately 2,500 cadets are currently undergoing training at the Regional Academy for Drug Control in Jos.
Additionally, another 2,500 cadets have just completed training as narcotic agents and narcotic assistants at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) College in Katsina.
These efforts are aimed at bolstering the agency’s manpower to combat the menace affecting the territory.
Tsakuwa remarked, “In September, with full support from the Federal Government, the agency hosted the 31st meeting of all Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, Africa (HONLAF) in Abuja.”
He also noted that President Bola Tinubu has reassured the NDLEA, the nation, and the international community of his commitment to the country’s fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, promising to provide the necessary tools to the agency.
Tsakuwa explained, “The proposed amendment of the agency Act, which is in its final stage at the National Assembly, will further boost the country’s fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
The amendments will come with stringent punitive measures for drug offences, discouraging illicit drug trafficking.”
“This singular effort demonstrates the extraordinary commitment of the federal government in the fight against the drug menace, particularly through its legislative arm.
The dynamic nature of drug trafficking trends necessitates periodic updates to our legal framework,” he added.
Tsakuwa further mentioned that the command has received unwavering support from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which has been instrumental in ridding the territory of drug peddlers.
He expressed appreciation to the FCTA for its support of the NDLEA FCT Command.
He also assured the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, of the command’s readiness and commitment to eradicate drug abuse and illicit trade in the FCT and its surroundings.
He said, “When the minister assumed office, he made it clear that the security of FCT was one of his top priorities.
Recognising the link between drug-related issues and other criminal activities such as terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery, the command will continue to play a critical role in ensuring the overall security of the FCT.”
The NDLEA boss added that the command maintains a strong working relationship with the judiciary, and judges promptly attend to all the agency’s cases.
This has contributed to the level of convictions achieved by the command in the past year.
“We will continue to leverage our cordial relationship to make more arrests and seizures for the overall safety of the Federal Capital,” Tsakuwa concluded. (NAN)
