A renowned historian and professor of history at the University of Texas, USA, Toyin Falola, emphasised that traditional values should not be disregarded in the face of modernity and modernization in the country.
behaviourThe historian delivered this advice during his convocation lecture at the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremonies of the University of Ilorin on Friday, suggesting that preserving these values would help maintain social and economic benefits for the nation.
He argued that these values, which include respect for elders and the integrity of the family, can foster virtuous behaviour, combat corruption, and discourage internet fraud, all of which are influenced by modern technology.
Falola observed that the decline in the promotion of values like self-respect and family integrity in Nigerian culture has contributed to the country’s high levels of corruption despite its strong religiosity.
He also pointed out areas where the nation’s economy had benefited from the promotion of its social-cultural values.
Falola mentioned that the growth of the film and fashion industries had significantly contributed to the nation’s economy.
Nigeria became the largest economy in Africa by recalibrating its economic focus, with Nollywood becoming the third-largest film industry in the world and the fashion industry ranking among the best globally.
The historian acknowledged the challenges of modernization, noting that it can threaten cultural heritage and erode indigenous knowledge systems, which may lead to societal dilemmas and the risk of losing cultural richness and diversity.
During the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Wahab Egbewole, called on both the federal and state governments to declare a state of emergency in the university education sector to address the issue of brain drain, which he believes is affecting the sector.
He also congratulated the graduating students and expressed confidence in their future contributions to their respective fields.
