Former English and Manchester United professional footballer, Sir Bobby Charlton, has passed away at the age of 86.
Charlton, who is widely considered one of the greatest football players of all time, passed away in the early hours of Saturday
The former Manchester United attacking-midfielder, central-midfielder, and left-winger was part of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
The death of the one-time Ballon d’Or winner was confirmed in an official statement released by his family.
The statement reads, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.”
Before his retirement from professional football, he made 606 senior appearances and netted 199 goals for Manchester United, where he spent most of his career.
He also had stints at Preston North End, Waterford, Newcastle KB United, Perth Azzurri, and Blacktown City football clubs.
At the international level, he made 106 appearances for the England senior team and scored 49 goals.
