A group of Edo people based in Europe and America have pledged to support the governorship aspiration of the immediate past Minister for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clement Agba.
The group, which hosted the former minister in Holland at the weekend, said their decision to support Agba was based on his past records of public service and not borne out of any political affiliation or ethnicity.
The group made this known in a statement by its chairman, Mr. Roland Omorodion, and secretary, Rosaline Odiye, and made it available to newsmen in Benin on Monday.
The group bemoaned the current situation in the state and appealed to the people to avoid the mistake of the last seven years and elect someone who would enthrone good governance in Edo State.
They noted that they have followed the political trajectory of Agba, and in addition to his service as a former Commissioner for Environment and Minister of the State, they had the assurance that he would right the wrongs of the last seven years.
They advised the people to jettison the call being made to use the 2024 governorship poll to settle ethnic squabbles.
According to the statement, “We mustn’t use the 2024 election to canvass support for any ethnic group but use it to settle the developmental challenges of the state.
“The only way we can, however, enthrone this good governance that we all yearn for is to go for the best person who is at the forefront of the challenges confronting us as a people and a state.
“This is exactly what informed our decision to support Agba, who has previously distinguished himself in the service of the state as a commissioner and the federation as a minister.
“Let’s not forget that he had a successful career in the private sector, specifically in the oil and gas sector, where he was shown in all areas of responsibility entrusted to him.
“Our support is not just going to be word of mouth; we will also mobilise resources and set up volunteers to canvass support for his aspirations across the nook and cranny of Edo State.
“Our decision to support Agba is not borne out of ethnicity; the event was hosted by the resident of Prince Martins Sadoh and from Etsako East LGA; the chairman, Omorodion, is from Ovia North East LGA.”
In his response, the minister, who said he was only in Holland for a quiet visit, reiterated his desire to see positive changes in Edo State.
“I am glad that you have taken note of my modest contributions to the state and Nigeria in my capacity as a Commissioner and also a Minister.
“Edo State has the capacity to be on the same developmental trajectory as Lagos, and it is our desire to see that state developed for the greater good of all.
