Following the murder of a Nigerian student, Chibuikem Emmanuel, in Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines, the Special Assistant on External Affairs to the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS National Senate, Comrade Ojukwu Leonard, has called on the MFA, Anambra State Government, Allen Onyema, and other relevant authorities and good individuals to, as a matter of urgent importance, join NiDCOM to come to their aid and assist in making sure that the remains of Chibuikem Emmanuel Chukwuneke, who was tortured and brutally murdered by six Chinese nationals, get to his family.
Late Chibuikem Emmanuel (29 years old) from Nnewi in Anambra State was tortured and killed on October 19, 2023, by his fiance’s Chinese employer, Ms. Jennie Wah, and his five other officials in their office.
According to Comrade Ojukwu Leonard, “Chibuikem’s visit (to her fiance’s employer) was primarily motivated by concerns for his girlfriend/fiance, Ms Diane, who was dismissed from her job.
“His initial intent was to inquire about her unjust termination and to retrieve the commission owed to her by her Chinese employer, which was denied her. However, he encountered a series of troubling events.
“Upon seeking answers, which he did not receive, Chibuikem decided to resign from his own job at the same workplace out of concern for Diane’s well-being. In an unforeseeable turn of events, Chibuikem was lured into the office of his employer, Ms. Jennie Wah, where he faced brutal torture inflicted by five Chinese men at the employer’s command. Jennie Wah cited the reason for this horrifying act as the relationship between Chibuikem and Diane, asserting that workplace relationships were not permissible”.
Chibuikem was a graduate nursing student doing his Master’s and working with Diane, his fiancee. The Nigerian embassy has written and followed up with the police and the police have declared the six wanted to be arrested
According to Comr. Ojukwu Leonard, “Alarmed by his prolonged absence, Chibuikem’s girlfriend, Diane, reached out for help from a friend named Gabriel, who is the supervisor in charge of the Africans working under the Call Centre company where Chibuikem and Diane worked. Together, they attempted to rescue Chibuikem on seeing he was inside the boss’s office but were forcefully detained by Jennie Wah’s associates.
“Subsequently, Jennie Wah fabricated false allegations, stating that Chibuikem would be taken to the police station on charges of workplace disruption and assault. She claimed that a government official was involved and that neither Gabriel nor Diane could intervene on Chibuikem’s behalf”.
Meanwhile, the torture continued within Jennie Wah’s office building, and Diane, deeply worried, rushed to the police station in search of her boyfriend. To her shock, the police reported that Chibuikem was not at the station. However, Diane spotted Jennie Wah entering the station and reporting an assault case against Chibuikem.
“While the police examined Jennie Wah’s allegations, Diane observed a van arriving at the station with Chibuikem inside, his hands and mouth bound.
“He was severely injured and barely able to stand, and his face, neck, head, and body were swollen and bleeding. He was immediately rushed to the hospital (Chong Hua Hospital) but, tragically, succumbed to his injuries”.
As a result, the representative NANS, while condemning the inhumane act committed to Chibuikem by the Chinese employer, has already called for justice, pleading with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant authorities to join hands with NiDCOM “for urgent financial support and assistance and to come and help.”
NANS disclosed, “It is imperative to note that an autopsy has been carried out and investigations are ongoing. The Nigerian Embassy in the Philippines is on the matter, mounting pressure on the police to do the needful, and the police have issued a statement declaring the six Chinese nationals wanted.
“But it is sad to say that there is a lack of financial support and mobilisation anywhere, not even from the government yet, to assist in other logistics. As I speak now, the cost of bringing back Ikem’s body, logistics, and other expenses has risen to N31,000,000.00.
I want to also state that it is very sad to note that apart from NiDCOM, after making publications online asking for detailed information on this gruesome murder, others have yet to even acknowledge the detailed information sent to them via their email address from NANS, and they have yet to respond positively on the matter.
“The longer Ikem’s body stays, the longer the increase in costs. MFA should please urgently assist while we continue to seek justice through the Embassy in Manila.
“We appeal to MFA to join NiDCOM to utilise its influence and resources to ensure justice is served. Our fervent plea is for the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Philippines, with NiDCOM, to bring home the corpse since the autopsy has been done. They don’t need the body, and the longer it stays, the more money it accumulates here”.However, NiDCOM had already responded.
NANS disclosed that the autopsy result stated “brain haemorrhage due to beatings,” noting, however, that the doctors are making a full and detailed analysis of the result and will be out in a few days.
