Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike has urged religious leaders in the country to steer clear of failed politicians who have continued to engage in negative partisanship even after the conclusion of the 2023 general election.
Wike gave this charge in Abuja on Wednesday during separate meetings with the Most Rev. Daniel Okoh-led Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Dr Tajudeen Adigun-led Committee of FCT Imams Initiative.
In both meetings, the religious groups pledged their support for the governor and commended his well-deserved appointment as Minister of FCT.
While addressing the CAN leaders, Wike offered a word of caution, saying, “You claim not to be politicians, but be vigilant when it comes to politicians. Be wary of those who are so desperate for power that they’ll do anything to attain it. Not everything you read on social media is accurate; always seek the truth.”
He stressed the importance of seeking clarification when hearing rumours or concerns about government actions, encouraging them to ask, “Is this true?” He also warned against political opponents who might use religious leaders to spread false narratives to discredit him.
During his meeting with the Imams, Wike emphasized his commitment to ensuring justice and collaboration with all stakeholders to move FCT forward. He assured them that his administration would not discriminate based on religion and reiterated his dedication to fulfilling the dreams of FCT’s founders.
Wike encouraged religious leaders not to be swayed by politicians who manipulate information for their agendas, noting that politics should not disrupt peace in the country. He also urged religious leaders to pray for the success of the newly elected president, as his failure could negatively affect the entire nation.
Governor Wike also revealed that he had recently discovered that the maintenance contracts for the National Mosque and Christian Ecumenical Centre had been halted. He ordered the immediate reactivation of these contracts and approved the payment of funds meant for both organizations for the year 2023.
Dr. Adigun, Chairman of the Committee, congratulated Wike on his appointment and welcomed him to Abuja as the Senior Minister of FCT. He expressed the committee’s readiness to collaborate with Wike and assured him of their commitment to good governance and unity among different faiths.
Overall, the meetings emphasised the need for vigilance, clarity, and cooperation in religious and political matters, with an emphasis on unity and good governance.
