Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has stated that no fewer than one million out-of-school children are roaming the streets of Kano.
This is just as the state government has announced that the present administration is making every effort to get them back to school.
Speaking on Thursday, on behalf of the state governor, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsslam Gwarzo, at the kickoff of the Study in Europe Fair in Nigeria held in Kano, expressed the readiness of the state government to partner with the EU in addressing the challenges.
According to him, the state government is constructing 75 new junior secondary schools in addition to 55 senior secondary schools across the state as part of the effort to address the problem of out-of-school children.
While speaking at the event, the European Union (EU) announced that it has awarded full Erasmus scholarships to 135 Nigerians this year, and they have already started their master’s programmes in Europe.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuella Isopi, disclosed that for more than 10 years, Erasmus has been open to students from all over the world, and since 2014, a total of 800 brilliant Nigerian students have been awarded scholarships under the Erasmus programme.
She added that the event is not only about connecting people through educational opportunities for young Nigerians who study in Europe but also about creating cooperation opportunities between universities and higher education institutions in Europe and Nigeria.
Education in Europe would help students develop the skills needed to be successful in life and would also contribute to developing the human capital of their country, which is fundamental for its development.
“This initiative today is not just encouragement but an opportunity to develop and utilise the skills you will acquire in Europe for the benefit of your society and your country,” she said.
