Contractors executing various contracts for the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) in Bauchi have been berated for not performing according to the terms of the contract and specifications.
They have therefore been summoned to appear before the Board and Management of Commission at its headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno state to explain the situation of the contracts.
The warning was given by the Chairman of the NEDC Board, Major General Paul Tarfa rtd when he led other Board members and Management to inspect ongoing projects in Bauchi state on Friday.
The team paid unscheduled on-the-spot assessment visit to the ongoing 300 housing units and mega school all in Dungal Village, along Jos road during which the Contractor handling the projects was chided for not performing to satisfaction.
Paul Tarfa who could not hide his displeasure over the action of the contractor, warned against compromising contract specifications and standards saying that, “It is unacceptable.”
The team also inspected the ongoing construction of the Medical Emergency Unit, Ophthalmology complex all at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi as well as the Bauchi State Office complex of the Commission as well as the ongoing construction of NEDC Mega School where the commission expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done.
The Chairman expressed displeasure over what he observed as substandard work being done by the contractor handling the proposed NEDC 300 Housing Units at Dungal community in Bauchi Local Government Area.
Speaking at the site with the contractor, the Management Director of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali summoned the contractor to report to the commission’s Headquarters in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
The team also stopped over at Soro in Ganjuwa LGA of the state to see the completed modern multipurpose cattle market which is yet to be put to use 2 years after it was completed by the NEDC.
The team expressed sadness that rather than be put to use for the purpose it was constructed, it has been turned into a large farm for crops thereby contributing to the dilapidation of the structures put in place for the market.
Though the team expressed displeasure over the development, neither the Board Chairman nor the MD /CEO of NEDC agreed to make pronouncement on the next line of action to be taken.
