BREAKING: PDP rejects Akwa Ibom REC, says he’s partisan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the appointment of Etekarnba Umoren as the Residential Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate had on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of  Umoren and six others Isah Ehimeakne (Edo), Oluwatoyin Babalola (Ekiti), Abubakar Ma’aji (Gombe), Shehu Wahab (Kwara), Aminu  Idris (Nasarawa) and Mohammed  Sadiq (Niger) as Residential Electoral Commissioners  (RECs).

Displaying the picture of Umoren in full-fledged All Progressive Congress (APC) regalia during a press conference at the Wadata Plaza Headquarters of the party on Thursday, Debo Ologunagba, PDPs national publicity secretary said Umoren is not only a card carrying member of the APC but has also participated in various campaigns involving the party in Akwa Ibom State.

Ologunagba called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint a neutral person as REC in Akwa Ibom saying Umoren “is a cap wearing, cloth wearing and dress wearing member of the APC who has been at APC campaigns in various elections.”

He said Section 141 of the Electoral Act 2022 is clear on the appointment of REC as any card carrying member of any political party must not be appointed as INEC officials.
