The Niger State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs organised a retreat aimed at enhancing the capacity and improving the service delivery of the local government council chairpersons in the state.
The retreat, themed ‘Empowering Local Government Leaders for Sustainable Development: Strategies, Challenges, and Opportunities’, was attended by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, with Alhaji Mu’azu Hamidu Jantabo serving as the host and chairman of the occasion. The event took place at the Niger State Liaison Office in Abuja.
An official statement issued on Wednesday, copies of which were provided to the press in Minna, highlighted the objective of the retreat: to provide valuable and transformative experiences for the council chairpersons. The focus was on empowering them as leaders to foster sustainable development at the grassroots level.
The retreat aims to serve as a platform for sharing knowledge, building capacities, and establishing networks. This will enable the council chairpersons to enhance their leadership abilities and make meaningful contributions to the development of Niger State.
During the opening of the retreat, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago advised the council leaders to remain focused, resolute, and resist distractions. The goal is to enhance progress in their respective areas.
Governor Bago stressed that local governments, particularly in rural areas, should capitalise on their comparative advantages by focusing on agriculture and its value chain. He highlighted the significant potential for generating income through agricultural-related activities.
According to the statement, Prof. Yahya Kuta and other professionals, such as Prof. M.T. Usman, extensively discussed the Niger State’s Green Economy Summit, particularly its prospects for the state.
Other speakers included Barr. Maurice Magaji, Commissioner of Lands and Survey, the former Accountant General of the State, Mr. Richard Umaru, and Mr. Akibu Jafaru, among others.
The strategic choice of the retreat venue resulted in lower costs for the state and minimised distractions for the participants. Most of the key speakers were drawn from the state. Consequently, many chairpersons shared their thoughts on the event’s benefits and key takeaways.
