Parents of students who were beneficiaries of the student scholarship introduced by the Kano state government have commended the State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the gesture, expressing that it is opening doors for children of families with limited financial backgrounds to benefit from democracy.
While interviewing a cross-section of parents at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) bidding farewell to their children on their way to India and Egypt, they shared their gratitude for the governor’s initiative in providing scholarships.
Malam Ibrahim Gwarzo stated, ‘I didn’t believe it would be real until today when I came to MAKIA with other parents to see my son airlifted to India to pursue his master’s degree.’
Hajia Aminat Dogo, a widow, mentioned, ‘Despite losing my husband three years ago, I struggled to ensure my daughter completed her first degree at Bayero University of Kano (BUK).’
She added, ‘It was pure luck. I am not a politician, nor am I related to any politician. But my daughter applied and was selected to be among the beneficiaries, and now she’s on her way to Egypt for her postgraduate studies.’
It’s noteworthy that the state government airlifted the third batch of 159 graduates out of the 1,001 indigenous students who graduated with first-class degrees. These students were sent to India for their Masters’s degree programmes in various disciplines.
The graduates departed from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in the afternoon, accompanied by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata, and other government officials to bid farewell to the beneficiaries.
Dr. Kofarmata, speaking after the flight took off, stated that the departure of the third batch is part of the government’s commitment to the implementation of the 1,001 postgraduate scholarship programme for 2023–2024.
He explained, ‘Upon arrival in India, the beneficiaries will be taken to seven Indian universities, including Mewar, Sharda, Sri Sai, Swarnnim, SR, Symbiosis, and Kalinga University, for their Masters Degree programmes.’
Dr Kofarmata indicated that the students, all first-class graduates, were selected based on their outstanding undergraduate performance.
These beneficiaries are expected to study in internationally competitive professional areas to address the manpower gap in the state and across the nation.
The Commissioner further disclosed, ‘The first batch consists of 140 students who departed for eight reputable universities to study in internationally competitive areas, aiming to bridge the manpower gap in the state and across the nation.’
He emphasised that the students are expected to gain experience, skills, and knowledge to enhance the state’s commercial status and explore other potentials for socio-economic development.
The first batch, comprising 140 students, departed for India immediately after the program’s launch on October 20. The second batch of 33 graduates was airlifted to study at the Islamic University, Uganda, on the same day.
The airlifting of graduates to study Master’s Degree programmes in various foreign universities fulfils the campaign promises of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in the state.
