Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has called for an increased security presence in the coastal and border state. He made this appeal during a meeting with Course 32 participants from the National Defence College in Abuja.
The governor emphasized the urgency of his request, stating that citizen safety remains the cornerstone of his administration. He pointed out that due to the unique topography of Cross River State, more security personnel are needed. From the creeks of Bakassi to the hills of Obanliku, a strengthened security architecture is required to combat any form of crime and criminality in the state.
Governor Otu commended the theme for the study tour, which is “Strengthening National Unity for Security and Development in Nigeria: An Appraisal of Efforts of Cross River State.” He described it as important and highlighted that over the years, Cross River has been using its rich cultural heritage to foster national unity and peaceful coexistence.
He also praised the military for their dedication, acknowledging that these are individuals who put their lives at risk to defend the territorial integrity of the country and maintain peace and stability.
The leader of the visiting team, Commodore Mohammed Adamu Muye, explained that the team is in Cross River as part of a national study tour to acquaint participants with the socio-political environment of Nigeria. The findings from this tour will be presented at the end, highlighting the unique aspects of Cross River based on firsthand information.
He further explained that the National Defence College, designated as the ECOWAS Training Centre of Excellence for Peace and Conflict Studies, has trained 2,758 participants since its inception in 1992. Course 32 includes 109 trainees, including 19 international participants from countries such as Brazil, India, and Bangladesh.
Muye added that the team’s national study tour will also cover Taraba, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Kano, and Kwara States. The aim is to generate viable ideas for strengthening national unity and cohesion.
