The Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF), at its recent quarterly meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Bauchi, announced its new name change to the Governors Spouses Forum (GSF).
This transition from “Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum” (NGWF) to “Nigeria Governors Spouses’ Forum” (GSF) emphasises the active role played by the First Ladies in advocating for increased women’s representation in leadership positions.
This transition was articulated in a communiqué released after the quarterly meeting held in Bauchi on November 7, 2023.
The meeting highlighted the 2023 achievements of the Forum, including successful mobilization and engagement of the First Ladies in various initiatives such as World Breastfeeding Week sensitization, handwashing awareness, human papillomavirus vaccine sensitization, drug eradication campaigns, sustained advocacy on sexual and gender-based violence, improved nutrition, women and girl child education, skills acquisition, and empowerment of women and youths, among other engagements across their respective states.
The Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) also concluded its third annual retreat, a significant occasion where members deliberated on the work plan for the upcoming year 2024. The retreat allowed members to connect and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse states within the nation.
Held in the beautiful state of Bauchi on Tuesday, the 7th, the retreat gathered governors’ wives from various states across Nigeria, underscoring the commitment of these exceptional women to unity, collaboration, and progress in service of their states and the nation as a whole.
At the meeting’s conclusion, the Forum made resolutions, including the collective endorsement by the First Ladies of the Women Digital Upskilling programme in partnership with the Lagos Business School and the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC). This initiative aims to sponsor girls and women from their respective states for digital training, aiming to reduce the gender gap in the digital industry.
The First Ladies pledged to intensify their advocacy and awareness efforts concerning the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. They plan to collaborate closely with primary health workers and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to effectively address resistance at the grassroots level.
In a demonstration of their commitment to capacity development, the First Ladies will participate in a workshop on sexual and gender-based violence organized by the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) in partnership with UN Women on November 9 and 10, 2023.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Forum will conduct a capacity-building programme focused on drug abuse prevention and mitigation. These initiatives aim to equip the First Ladies with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to engage and advocate for these critical social issues within their states effectively.
The First Ladies endorsed the joint compact on ending gender-based violence and harmful practises, a collaboration of the NGWF and UNICEF.
Seventeen First Ladies amended the meeting, with the Chairperson, Prof. (Amb) Olufolake Abdulrazak, the First Lady of Kwara State, reading the Communique.
