Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State has declared that politics is his mission field as a Christian, saying that only God will determine how long he will stay as governor of the state.
The Governor, while addressing the 104th General Church Council meeting of the Church Christ in Nations (COCIN) on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, charged the Christian community and the entire people of the state not to allow politics or external influences to bring division.
He said, “It is not easy, and it has not been easy. I know that whatever challenges we are facing, God will see us through.
I came into politics as my mission field. I know that it is God who brought me here, and no matter how long I stay, it is God who will determine it.
“We should not allow politics and external influences to bring division among us, so that we can continue to walk the path of unity and that the name of the Lord shall be exalted.”
Governor Muftwang told the church council that the state government will continue to hold religious leaders in high esteem, accord them the respect they deserve, and charge church leaders in the state to always avail themselves to give advice to the government.
“We would continue to respect our leaders in the church and listen to their counsel. Whatever you think we need to do, you can draw our attention to it. It may be difficult to talk to you individually, but since you have constituted authority, you can channel such information through the authority concerned.
The governor added that his administration will continue to prioritise agriculture since the state is blessed with some of the best arable land and weather in the country.
He declared that the only possible way to reduce the debt burden of Plateau State, which stands at over N400 billion, is to create wealth and expressed happiness that the COCIN has started toeing the line through its agricultural programme.
Governor Muftwang therefore charged the religious leaders to embrace and preach peace and collaborate with the government towards advancing peace in all communities in the state.
“Peace is something we must all work to achieve; we must continue to work together to ensure that peace is restored in all our communities so that our state can develop as envisaged,” he declared.
