The Oyo State Local Government Staff Pension Board has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of retirees from both public primary schools and local government.
The Permanent Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Lukman Akinola Muraina, stated this Wednesday during an interactive meeting with prospective retiree teachers at the conference hall, secretariat, Ibadan.
He stressed that the state government will not leave any stone unturned to ensure senior citizens are cared for in the scheme of things.
Muriana gave kudos to the state governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, for the payment of workers’ and pensioners salaries on the 25th of every month, among other welfare packages.
While explaining the purpose of the interactive meeting, he said the meeting was organised to enlighten prospective retirees on the procedures involved in the processing of files and emphasised that the Board never requested a bribe or any financial inducement before processing retiree files or before payment of pensions and gratuities.
“We don’t want anything that will tarnish the image of the governor of Oyo State. We discovered that some agents and touts are collecting money from prospective retirees, especially at the local government education authority level. I want to advise you that you should not engage the services of any agent. We want to block corrupt practices during the processing of files,” he said.
He therefore assured them that he would engage the management of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board on the matter
In their separate remarks, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUT) wing, Comrade Dosu Akinpelu, and the Secretary, Comrade Tunji Ogunwale, appealed to the prospective retirees to comply with the Permanent Secretary’s advice and stop patronising touts and agents in order to avoid financial exploitation.
Some of the prospective retirees, Mrs Fadairo Caroline, Comrade Olajire Tajudeen Atanda, Mrs Olubunmi Adio, and Mrs Adenike Atanda, expressed appreciation to the Permanent Secretary for organising the interactive meeting to enlighten and educate them to avoid financial exploitation being practised by corrupt officials.
Present at the interactive meeting were the Chairman and Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Teachers Wing, Comrade Dosu Akinpelu and Comrade Tunji Ogunwale, respectively, and the Directors and Desk Officers of the Board, among others.
