The All-Rights Foundation (TAF Africa) has said that 80 per cent of people with disabilities voted in Kogi State to exercise their franchise during the governorship elections.
They also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and security operatives for the peaceful process.
Hajiya Zainab Suleiman, Trustee of TAF Africa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on their findings as it concerns the participation of the PWD during the governorship election.
The press briefing was held at the situation room of TAF Africa, located at the Edge-Drive Hotel in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital, on Saturday.
“It was reported by our observers that 80% of persons with disabilities were allowed to exercise their priority voting rights in Kogi State, 75% in Imo State, and 67% in Bayelsa State.
She also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for giving priority to persons with disabilities exercising their franchise before other electorates at polling units.
“Our task is to ensure accessible voting for persons with disabilities in Nigeria. We are also determined to ensure that PWDs are accorded recognition and equal opportunity in their immediate society. The election generally is peaceful,” the TAF Africa Trustee disclosed.
Samuel Mark, representative of the Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disability in Kogi, who also spoke at the press conference, lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the priority granted to PWD at the various polling units across the state, as well as security agencies that took cover for their safety to vote without difficulty or hindrance.
Mrs Eunice Agbogun, Coordinator, TAF Africa Observer, Kogi State, in her contribution, called for special attention to persons with disabilities by the three tiers of government in Nigeria, along with other well-to-do citizens.
She equally demanded equal opportunity among the able and the physically challenged citizens in order to give everyone a sense of belonging.
