The Senate on Wednesday appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to call off the ongoing strike which has paralysed economic activities across the country.
The Red prayers equally resolved to invite the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero and his counterpart in the TUC, Festus Osifo for a meeting.
The resolutions were sequel to a
a motion by Senator Abdul Ningi.
The organised Labour had embarked on strike to protest the brutalisation of the President of the NLC in Owerri, Imo state capital when he led a protest in the southeast state.
Ajaero had accused the Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma as mastermind of the physical attack.
In the motion which was presented by Senator representing Ekiti Central and Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Ningi described the physical assaults of the NLC President as most unfortunate.
Senator Ningi maintained that the Constitution accords the NLC President the right to be involved in the politics of Imo State.
He said: “The Senate is aware that the strike which has commenced since 14th of November 2023 is not unconnected with the alleged assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress during the electioneering campaign that took place in Imo State.
“The Senate worries that most of the demands of the NLC are not targeted towards just the welfare of the Nigerian workers but essentially targeted most essentially at issues arising from the alleged political involvement of the President of the NLC, who also is an indigene and also have a right to a part of the campaign process in Imo State.”
He further expressed concern that if the strike was allowed to continue, “Nigeria will be worse for it.”
He expressed worry that if the strike was allowed to continue, Nigerians would be the worst for it and it could lead to a total collapse of the economy.
