The National Congress of Ohaji Youths NACOY, in the oil-rich Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo, has threatened to shut down the operation of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) in the region.
The youth body has also issued a 7-day ultimatum to the SPDC and other affiliated oil companies operating in the area within which to start full reconstruction of Umuapu-Ihie-Obitti access road and Obosima/Ohoba/Assa road.
In a statement issued in Owerri by the President of NACOY Comrade Nwosu Tochukwu, the group regretted that last week’s remedial work by SPDC left much to be desired on the said road
He said: “we are given SPDC and other affiliated companies, 7days ultimatum to start full reconstruction of Umuapu-Ihie-Obitti Access Road, Obosima-Ohoba-Assa Road or face complete shut down of those roads”.
They also called on all the heads of security agencies that provide security to the Oil companies in Ohaji to please advise the Oil companies to do the needful, adding that the pains, sufferings and hardship their people are going through as a result of the activities of these companies in Ohaji is becoming unbearable and excruciating and
The NACOY President reminded his brothers and sisters especially those who are indigenous contractors, C.L.Os, Staff, Board Members to Shell, Water Smith, Sterling Global, Agpc, Seplat, etc, that what is really going on with Umuapu -Ihie-Obitti Road in unfortunate.
He said:” our people are not happy with the games Oil companies are playing with this Umuapu-Ihie-Obitti Road and other access roads in Ohaji. God knows our people have exhibited enough patience and have endured more than enough from these oil companies operating in Ohaji”.
The President recalled that last time, their mothers blocked Umuapu-Ihie-Obitti road to protest against the deplorable condition of that access road adding that if not the immediate intervention of the BOT chairperson Mrs Eugenia Onyiriuka and her husband who after visiting the spot summon a meeting at Simark Royal Hotels Mgbirichi to plead with the community youth leaders where he assured the youth that SHELL has awarded that road and very soon full reconstruction work will commence on that road.
The youth body expressed total disappointment that up till they didn’t know what had been holding the flag-off of the reconstruction of that road, which Shell announced that they had awarded.
