The department of English and Literary Studies of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), has launched its first magazine at the university’s auditorium.
The magazine, titled; ‘Literary Scope’, entails a bevy of literary and academic outputs of both the lecturers and students of the department.
During the event on Wednesday, which was graced by several dignitaries within the university environment and beyond, the Head of Department (HOD), Dr Abubakar Alkali, who led the launching extended his tribute to everyone who chose to grace the programme.
According to him, “It’s a thing of pride for the department. I am very excited. For a long time, this is the first time we have had something like this.”
Dr Alkali commended the resilience of the executive members of the English and Literary Studies Students’ Association (ELSSA), for putting so much effort into the realisation of the project, and warned against the lavishing of funds gotten from the launching.
He urged the incoming ELSSA executives to maintain the tradition of their predecessors. “And for those excos that are coming, they should at least do something like this too. It should be sustained.”
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. L.S Bilbis, represented by Prof M.G Mahuta, doled out N100,000 for ten copies of the magazine which were to be donated to the school libraries. He also gave N30,000 for three personal copies.
Also, Prof. Abubakar Abdullahi, the representative of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, donated cash for five copies of the magazine. Likewise some guests, lecturers, and alumni of the department participated in the launching.
While speaking to Tribune CampusXtra, the outgoing president of the English and Literary Studies Students’ Association, Mr Mubarak, expressed his delight over the actualisation of such academic achievements for his department.
“I felt elated as everything went according to the plan. The event was colorful and garnished with debate and speech presentations.
“This magazine is a combination of students’ and lecturers’ works. We appreciate everyone who contributed to its publication and launching,” he added.
