Pensioners honour Tribune, say it is the voice of justice

PENSIONERS, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), on Thursday night gave an award of excellence to the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) PIC., publishers of the Nigerian Tribune, Saturday Tribune and Sunday Tribune Titles for being the voice of the voice-less, standing for justice and truth over the years and constantly defending the cause of pensioners and the entire citizenry in Nigeria.

The Gala and Award Night which took place at the Oyo State Council Secretariat.

Onireke, Ibadan also had Channels Television and Galaxy Television as recipients of similar awards.

The national president of the pensioners, Mazi Godwin Abumisi noted that the Tribune newspapers have remained steadfast, committed and consistent with its style of championing the cause of the pensioners and the welfare of the citizens.

Mr. Abumisi remarked that the founder of Tribune titles, Chief Obafemi Awolowo had his name written in gold even in death.

The N UP president said that it was sad that various administrations in Nigeria had taken the welfare of pensioners with levity.

He lamented that the constitutional pro visions which provide for the welfare of pensioners were deliberately disregarded.

Speaking n the issue of fuel subsidy and parliatives in the country, Mr. Abumisi said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu put the cart before the horse by withdrawing subsidy before introducing the parliative measures.

The chairman, South West Zone, Mr. Waidi Oloyede in his welcome address called on the governments especially at the state levels to take practical steps to address the challenges caused by the sudden removal of fuel subsidy which inadvertently has brought untold hardship to their members.

The NUP Public Relations Officer, South West Zone, Comrade Olusegun Abatan in his address noted that the survival of pensioners at this period is hectic and painful.

The Head (Legal) ANN PIc., Barr. Wole Efunnuga who received the award on behalf of the company expressed appreciation on behalf of the Awo-lowo Dynasty, the management and staff of Tribune tiles.

He assured that ANN PIc will continue to champion the cause of the masses and will not relent in advocating good welfare package for the Pensioners.
