A serving corps member in Ibadan, Oyo State, Ashaolu Funmilola Praise, has sensitised over 40 secondary school girls on sanitary and reproductive health.
Ashaolu, who also distributed sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other gift items to the participants, said the programme is timely and necessary for girls to take their health seriously.
She said they must take care of themselves by maintaining good and clean hygiene, especially while menstruating.
Ashaolu, who is serving at the Celestial Church Christ High School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, partnered with the Rotary Club of Iyaganku Ibadan, District 9125, and the Rotary Club of Mende Midtown, District 9110, to organise the programme.
She disclosed that the sensitisation programme was to make students, especially girls, know about their sexual and reproductive health, including menstruation.
The facilitator urged the government at all levels to prioritise sanitary health among girls, just as she appealed to parents to be their children’s best friends.
Speaking, she said: “The theme of today’s (Friday) programme is the healthy girl child, and the essence is to enhance, amplify, and sensitise the students of this local government.
“Most times, sanitary health and reproductive health are usually neglected in society, so this programme is to sensitise students on what to do when they are on their period and what not to do.
“Today, we have about 40 female students from Celestial Church Christ High School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, Ansar-us-deen High School, Oke-Ado High School, Baptist High School, and Oke-Bola High School.”
In their separate remarks, the President of the Rotary Club of Iyaganku Ibadan, Mr Akindayo Famuregun, said the girl child needs assistance in the area of equal access to quality education and general protection.
He said the programme is related to their service in the Rotary Club, saying it falls under disease control and hygiene.
“I want to advise parents to assist and monitor the girl’s hygiene because it is very important to us at the Rotary Club.”
Also, the president of the Rotary Club of Mende Midtown, Mr. Richard Edi, said girl-child education is important and the club’s input into the programme is a call to action.
Meanwhile, the head girl of Celestial Church of Christ High School, Kudirat Babatunde, lauded the facilitator for her gesture, adding that the programme had exposed them to sanitary and reproductive hygiene.
