The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACreSAL) Project in Zamfara State officially inaugurated 98 local government project implementation committees in the state.
Speaking at the formal inaugural event held on Tuesday evening at the Karma Hotel in Gusau, the Zamfara State Acting Project Coordinator (SPC), Nasiru Bello, highlighted that ACReSAL projects aim to bolster the livelihoods of communities in the state.
Bello disclosed that the inauguration of local government project implementation committees stands as a pivotal activity for the project’s success in the state. He further revealed that each of the 14 local government areas has seven members on the project implementation committee within their region.
“The project is aimed at addressing critical environmental challenges in the 19 northern states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja.”
The Zamfara state commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mahmud Mohammed Abdullahi, mentioned during his address that the ACRESAL Project, funded by the World Bank for six years, spans three ministries: Environment, Agriculture, and Water Resources in the state.
He noted that the Zamfara state government, under the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, has provided essential support for the successful implementation of the project. This includes counterpart funds, operational vehicles, office accommodation, and the deployment of project staff to the State Project Implementation Unit (SPMU).
Abdullahi explained that the ACReSAL intervention areas in Zamfara state for 2023–2024 include the construction of six earth dams at Koramar Wanke (Gusau LGA), Fantaru (Bungudu LGA), Kaura Namoda Town (Kaura Namoda LGA), Nato Lake (Bakura LGA), Modomowa village (Birnin Magaji LGA), and Ganbanda village (Gummi LGA) in the state.
“Additionally, five Flood and Erosion Control Sites at Bulka Area (Gusau LGA), Bela Gidan Dan Gwari (Bungudu LGA), Maradun Town (Maradun LGA), Bukkuyum Town (Bukkuyum LGA), and Bardoki village (Gummi LGA) were included.”
“There will also be the installation of six solar-powered boreholes in cholera hotspot areas across five LGAs within the three senatorial zones and the restoration of nine hundred and thirty-four hectares of degraded land areas in the state.”
