The Taraba state government, in collaboration with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), organised a one-day training session for broadcast journalists in Taraba.
Barrister Zainab Usman Jalingo, the Taraba state commissioner for information and reorientation, revealed during the event in Jalingo that the initiative was part of Governor Kefas’ “moving forward” agenda, aimed at ensuring high-quality broadcasting. This emphasis was intended to effectively promote the administration’s policies.
The commissioner noted that this decision was prompted by the changing trends in the broadcast industry, necessitating the need to keep state-owned media professionals updated on industry changes.
She highlighted that the lack of training had adversely affected productivity, emphasising the importance of providing additional knowledge to equip practitioners for optimal performance in their daily roles.
“The lack of training has negatively affected productivity in Taraba’s broadcast industry. This training aims to equip you with additional knowledge that will enhance your performance in your daily practice,” she stated.
“The ‘MOVING FORWARD’ initiative by Governor Agbu Kefas prioritises quality broadcasting to effectively project the administration’s policies. Communicating government policies and programmes can be best achieved through the broadcast media due to its flexibility and wide reach.”
“Governor Agbu Kefas recognises the evolving trends in the industry, such as the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, user-generated content, and the new guidelines in the ‘Nigeria Broadcasting Code.’ It is crucial that broadcast media professionals have a clear understanding of these trends and guidelines.”
“The ‘Nigeria Broadcasting Code,’ a working document produced and disseminated by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) as mandated by its enabling act, should be closely followed by broadcasters.”
“The government expects this training not only to enhance the professionalism of broadcast journalists but also to address frequent breaches of the broadcasting code, which often result in stations paying substantial sums in sanctions to NBC,” the commissioner noted.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Agnes Ukpo, the Taraba state officer of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), explained that contemporary dynamics, such as hate speeches during politics and security challenges like insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry, necessitate a professional and vibrant broadcast media to meet the public’s expectations for quality information, education, and entertainment.
“At NBC, we receive, process, and consider applications for the establishment, ownership, or operation of radio and television stations. By upholding equity and fairness principles in broadcasting, we regulate and control the broadcast industry. We apply sanctions, including licence revocation for defaulting stations that operate against the broadcast code and public interest, among other statutory mandates.”
“We regulate to maintain the integrity of the airwaves and ensure the public’s right to quality broadcasting,” Ukpo stated.
The Nigerian Tribune reported that managers of broadcast media organisations in the state lauded Governor Kefas for the initiative, affirming that the capacity-building initiative would elevate the broadcast quality in Taraba.
