The Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria (KSM) has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reject the newest amendments to the International Health Regulations, an instrument of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
At a press conference to herald the 44th Supreme Convention of the Order in Ibadan, Oyo State, the KSM also stated that it believes in one indivisible Nigeria where no one is oppressed or suppressed and will not support calls to divide the country.
The Supreme Knight, Dr Charles Mbelede, who addressed newsmen, said Nigeria should promptly reject the 2022 amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHRs), saying Nigeria should promptly reject the amendment because “it stripped citizens of their rights to democratically participate in health decisions at the global level.”
The KSM said Nigeria should reject the IHRs to ensure the freedom of Nigerians, saying that since their adoption in 1969, the IHRs have been an instrument of international law that is legally binding on Nigeria and 195 other WHO member states.
“WHO effectively created a council of leaders independent of the people of the world, stripping them of their rights to democratically participate in health decisions at the global level,” he said, adding that the WHO’s constitution gave the authority to adopt the IHRs and their future amendments to delegates of state parties without any parliamentary or executive input from member states.
Mbelede said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should notify the WHO of Nigeria’s desire to reject the May 2022 amendment, adding, “We call on well-meaning Nigerians to ensure that our freedom is protected by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Speaking on the calls by some Nigerians that the country should be split, Dr Mbelede said the ideals of the KSM do not agree with the call for a split Nigeria, pointing out that “the Order is committed to the unity and oneness of Nigeria.”
He said the KSM believed in planning and thinking together as a way to greater national achievements, saying, “The KSM believes in one indivisible Nigeria where no one is oppressed or suppressed and Christians must continue to participate in politics and governance until such time changes are embraced.
“Rather than break, the KSM believes that we should think together and plan together so that we can produce together.
“I cannot say that our corporate policy is for Nigeria to divide. We don’t believe that. We believe that there is a need to ensure social ecology, continuity of movements and discussions, equality, betterment, and prosperity for mankind, to the glory of God.
We must think and plan together as a means of achieving our national goals. Nigeria can never be divided if we think and work together.”
