The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has issued a warning to politicians in Ondo State, cautioning them against exploiting the health status of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for political gains.
The CD threatened to take legal action against any members of the Ondo State Executive Council found diverting state funds to the anti-graft commission. This resolution came after the CD’s meeting in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, urging stakeholders to exercise caution and avoid dragging the state into another political crisis.
In a statement issued and signed by its National President, Pastor Ifeanyi Odili, and the Ondo State Chairman, Toba Taiwo, the CD stated that any public office holder found diverting state funds would be brought before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The group leaders, who examined allegations of financial fraud across MDAs in Ondo state and the falsification of the ailing governor’s signature, warned that they were prepared to not only drag any member of the state ExCo found diverting state funds before the EFCC but also ready to subject such individuals to public humiliation.
The CD cautioned politicians against playing politics with matters related to the health of the governor. They charged certain stakeholders to be cautious in their push to hand over power to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Lucky Ayedatiwa, as Acting Governor, without adhering to appropriate constitutional dictates.
The statement emphasised, “We note the fact that it is natural for anyone to fall sick, and when it happens, one should not take joy in it. All that is needed is to give the sick person the appropriate support and prayers to recover, rather than becoming engrossed in acts capable of more damage to his person or character – as every man is prone to ailment.”
The CD appealed to all stakeholders to allow the status quo to subsist, as agreed upon with the president at the Presidential Villa recently; namely, the Governor continuing in office while the Deputy Governor continues his job. They called upon certain members of the State Executive Council not to view the absence of the Governor as an act out of the ordinary, hence avoiding any display of disaffection within the fold.
The CD also urged the Ondo State House of Assembly to clearly define its goals and appropriately drive them in matters discussed in the state. Finally, they called on all indigenes of the state to pray for the speedy recovery of the governor.
