Global Alliance For Improve Nutrition (GAIN) and the World Food Programme (WFP), of the United Nations in collaboration with the Federal and Kebbi State Government have trained information officers from the state Ministry of Information and some selected media practitioners on rice fortification with the aim of transmitting same to the rural communities across the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Alhaji Saidu Buhari, who declared the workshop noted that the Global Alliance for Improve Nutrition is an alliance driven by vision of a world without nutrition and partner with organisations to increase access to missing nutrients in diets necessary for the growth and healthy society.
He said the training was aimed at providing the participants as information officers with the required knowledge and skills to be used for sensitization and awareness creation in communities across State as advocates for Gain.
According to him, this demonstrates the commitment of GAIN towards the fortification process and the championing of improved nutrition in the State.
While wishing a successful training, the Permanent Secretary, implores the participants to be attentive, contribute, and actively participate in the training.
In his lectures, Mr. Seun Elere, who is the Project Coordinator, Large Scale Food Fortification for GAIN said the aim of the training was to collaborate with the Kebbi state Ministry of Information to disseminate information on what rice fortification and fortified rice is all about.
Elere also lectured on Nigeria’s malnutrition challenges and food fortification efforts in Nigeria aimed at addressing a macronutrient deficiency in Nigeria.
On his part, Mr. Ekene Onyeagba a Food and Nutrition Expert, at United Nations World Food Programme, also gave an overview of WFP and intervention in Nigeria with regard to malnutrition and other related deficiencies in food consumption.
