A non-governmental organisation, FlexiSAF Foundation, has advocated for children’s right to education and called on the attention of the government and relevant education stakeholders to prioritise education.
The Foundation’s third edition of annual fitness proceedings, tagged ‘The Walk for Education’ to commemorate 2023 Human Rights Day, was a testament to its unwavering commitment to ensuring that no child is deprived of the opportunity to learn and reach their potential through quality education.
The theme for this year’s Walk for Education, “2030 on the Horizon: Naija’s Journey to Achieving SDG 4,” underscored the urgency of tackling Nigeria’s education crisis, which currently bears the unfortunate distinction of
having the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.
This theme served as a clear call to action for advocacy and increased awareness, urging stakeholders to prioritise education, particularly for marginalised children.
It also emphasised the critical need for increased government investment, enhanced accountability, and improved coordination in Nigeria’s education sector, signifying that, through collective effort, the ambitious goal of providing quality education for all can indeed be achieved by 2030.
All the dignitaries present, at different times, commended the Foundation for organising the walk event as it created an avenue to send a loud and clear message about the importance of providing children with access to quality education regardless of their social class, background, or gender.
According to the Executive Director of FlexiSAF Foundation, Mrs Amina Abubakar, the event was organised, first and foremost, to raise awareness among the general public about the alarming number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
The event also aimed to amplify the Foundation’s mission to ensure that every child gets unhindered access to quality education. Likewise, the event was a call to action for the government’s increased commitment to education to facilitate the realisation of SDG4 ahead of 2030.
The Walk for Education 3.0 was a huge success owing to the tremendous contributions of generous sponsors such as the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Arabi Bello and Associates, and Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV), among others.
Finally, at the after-walk event, the FlexiSAF Foundation proudly unveiled the Young Advocate of the Year, announcing Yahaya Abubakar as the distinguished winner of the 2023 inaugural Advocate of the Year contest
organised under its Young Education Advocates Programme.
Yahaya Abubakar, recognised for his exceptional dedication to promoting social change in his society, received a noteworthy cash prize of 100,000 naira, along with an award plaque of recognition and a certificate of achievement.
The event also acknowledged the outstanding contributions of the first and second runner-ups, each receiving a commemorative plaque and certificate.
In a spirit of appreciation for all participants, certificates were distributed to recognise their remarkable achievements during this inspiring initiative.
