The Dosunmu Onikoyi royal family of Ikoyi Obalende and Imoba has chosen Prince Abdul Ganiu Onikoyi as the Oba-elect for the Ikoyi Obalende and Imoba kingdoms.
The Oba-elect, according to the secretary of the royal family, Prince Abdul Jubrila Ademola Ajasa Onikoyi, was elected in an election held on Saturday, November 23rd and 30th, with heads and representatives from each of the eight lineages in attendance.
Speaking further on the voting pattern, Ajasa said the oba-elect had six votes to emerge as the candidate of the family, while one family abstained and another family was absent itself.
He said, “Today’s journey commenced gracefully after the announcement and confirmation of the demise of Oba Patrick Ibikunle Fafunwa.
The Dosunmu Onikoyi royal house wasted no time putting in place various machines to present the next Oba because it was the turn of the ruling house.
Calls were made to senior members and other key members of the eight lineages of Dosunmu Onikoyi. SMS was also sent to the above members to signify their interest in the Obaship race.
Six aspirants were screened for the stool, out of which the candidate for the Onikoyi stool emerged in the person of Prince AbdulGaniu Onikoyi.
In the election, Prince Ganiu scored six out of the eight votes from the eight lineages that took part in the process.
Therefore, he returned elected as the Oba Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Moba lands from the Dosunmu Onikoyi royal house, whose turn it is to elect an Oba being one of the two ruling houses.”
In his acceptance speech, the Oba-elect appreciated all members of the lineages just as he promised to reunite and promote the interests of the entire Onikoyi family.
He said, “I am humbled and grateful for the honour of being selected as the Oba-elect of the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House.
Please allow me to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to Almighty God for allowing us to witness this significant moment.
We must also acknowledge and honour the efforts of our ancestors, who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this point.
I would like to extend my profound gratitude to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and leadership, and I pray that God guides him to lead Nigeria to greater heights.
I am equally grateful to our revered royal father, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Babatunde Osuolale Akinolu, for his fatherly support in maintaining unity and peace in Lagos State.
I would also like to express my heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu for his exceptional leadership in Lagos State.
I am also grateful to the Obas and chiefs of Lagos State, our respected elders, and the Idejo chiefs for their tireless efforts in preserving and promoting our rich cultural heritage.
To the youth of our family, I commend you for representing our family name with pride and setting an excellent example for future generations.
I am fully aware that this victory is not mine alone; it belongs to all of us. It is the result of our collective efforts and unity.
As the Oba-elect, I assure every family member that my door will always be open to you. Together, we will work towards the development of our family and strive for remarkable milestones.
We will establish a programme to cater to the social needs of our elders and support our youth in both academics and entrepreneurship. We will rebuild our ancestral home, “Iga Onikoyi,” and empower our market women to thrive.
In our quest for progress, we will introduce a transport system exclusively for the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Family, proudly displaying our family name. It is time for us to embrace royalty and feel its essence.
I reaffirm that my door will always be open to all family members. Together, we will uplift our rich heritage and preserve our cultural legacy. In unity, we will stand strong in peace and harmony.
