The new president of the Edo State chapter of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Dr Irene Akhideno, has pledged to make women’s health a priority on the national agenda during her tenure.
Dr Akhinedo made the pledge during her investiture as the 23rd president of the Edo State chapter of MWAN which held at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Edo State.
The new Edo State MWAN president assured that through advocacy and policy reforms, her leadership would ensure that the association would continue to be a strong voice for the rights and healthcare needs of women and girls.
She similarly pledged her commitment to building the capacity of women in the medical field to enhance their capacity to deliver high quality and gender sensitive healthcare services.
“Through medical mission, health camps and health education programmes, we will promote preventive care and empower women and girls with knowledge to make informed health decisions.
“We will encourage our members to embark on research projects that address the unique health challenges faced by women. By practicing evidence-based practices, we can contribute to policy reform and agenda development of gender-specific healthcare interventions”, she also stated.
While launching a Cancer Support Fund, the new MWAN president, explained that it was geared towards addressing the multifaceted needs of cancer patients and their families, noting that MWAN believes that no one fighting cancer should face the difficulties alone.
The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, congratulated the new president of MWAN in Edo State, Dr Akhideno, noting that her acceptance of the responsibility was a testament of her dedication and passion for the improvement of health care in the state.
Dr. Alli lauded the Medical Women Association of Nigeria for being in the forefront of championing healthcare, advocating for Women’s health and fostering advancement in medical profession.
While handing over, the immediate past president of MWAN, Edo State, Dr. Ehi Isa, in her valedictory speech, expressed confidence in the capacity of the new president to deliver on the mission and objectives of the association.
