Human rights activist and former lawmaker from Kaduna State, Senator Senator Shehu Sani, has condemned the fresh attack launched on a village in Mangu Local Government area of Plateau State by non-state actors on Tuesday.
It will be recalled that the local government became subject of a terrific national outrage weeks ago when some dark-hearted assailants launched blood-curling simultaneous attacks on communities in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi area of the local government, killing over 200 residents.
But while the state government was yet to get over the life-draining and catastrophic effects of the massacre, the attackers returned to the local government on Tuesday for a fresh heavy onslaught during which many people were reportedly killed and several houses torched in Sabogari area of the local government.
In response to the attack, the state government immediately imposed a 24-hour curfew in the local government even though it said the fresh crisis is not politically motivated.
But while reacting in a tweet on Wednesday, the Senator said the state government must go beyond merely declaring a curfew to taking other cogent measures that will ensure the safety of the residents in the LGA.
“The video footage of what happened in Mangu Plateau State is unfortunate and despicable. Federal, state and security agencies must ensure the protection of lives and properties in that town and its environs,” he tweeted.
Speaking further, the Senator said, “Nasarawa State Government can set up a security outfit or vigilante group if they want to, but Miyetti Allah in Nasarawa or any ethno cultural group setting up a security outfit can be a recipe for anarchy.”
It will be recalled that in a recent post, the Senator had also condemned the rising spate of killings and kidnapping in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following reports that over 87 FCT residents have been killed and 176 others kidnapped since the incumbent administration of President Bola Tinubu came to the saddle.
Senator Sani expressed displeasure that the Nigeria’s capital can be experiencing such an upsurge in cases of kidnappings, despite previous federal government securing a $460 million Chinese loan for the installation of CCTV cameras across the city.
He said regrettably “both the money and the Cameras have since been kidnapped by elements of the past Governments.”
