There is voter apathy in the Plateau North District Senatorial and the Jos/Basa federal constituency re,-run election in Plateau State, as most voters shun pulling units.
Recall that the Appeal Court Abuja Division in November 2023 sacked the former minority leader and a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Musa Agah, who represented Jos North/Bassa, for lack of political structure.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) excluded the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the ballot and hinged its decision on the judgment of the Appellate Court.
Going around some of the polling units, Nigerian Tribune findings revealed that they were empty as voters were not too keen on coming out to cast their votes.
A returning officer at Rock Haven said voting materials were made available on time, adding that as of 1:25 pm, only twelve people had come out to vote of the 1,330 registered voters.
In parts of Jos North and Jos South local government areas, voting has not commenced as sensitive materials were yet to arrive when the Sunday Tribune visited at about 1:25 p.m.
The Sunday Tribune findings revealed that there was a generally low turnout compared to the general election, which witnessed a large turnout of voters.
A cross-section of voters who spoke with the Sunday Tribune attributed the low turn to the exclusion of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). They added that many were not too enthusiastic about the election considering what the state passed through politically in recent times.
One of them declared, “Don’t forget Plateau North is the stronghold of the PDP in Plateau State, so the exclusion of the PDP actually contributed to the low turnout, coupled with the fact that by-elections often record low turnout”.
