Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and his counterpart in Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, and other dignitaries attended the Shehu of the Borno Kanem Summit Special Durbar in Maiduguri.
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al-Amin Elkanemi, hosted the special durbar at Ramat Square on Sunday in Maiduguri in honour of the ancient Kanem Borno Empire Summit.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that the Kanem Borno Cultural Submit Colloquium was organised by the Borno Emirate Concerned Citizens Forum to unite Kanuri-speaking people who originated from the ancient Kanem Borno Empire and to show the world the beauty and uniqueness of Kanuri cultural identity, arts, and artefacts.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, and the minister of art, culture, and the creative economy, Hannatu Musa, were among the dignitaries who attended the special durbar.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had earlier, in his remarks, said the state government will continue collaborating with traditional leaders to preserve and protect the ancient Kanem Borno cultural identity, which is a symbol of pride for all Kanuri people.
“This administration is committed to the advancement of our cultural heritage; therefore, I urge you all to promote the uniqueness of our culture to the world,” Zulum stated.
The venue of the durbar was filled with horses, women wearing coloured Kanuri traditional attire, ear-soothing Ganga Kura music, gunshots, the smoking of traditional incense, popularly known as Turaren Wuta, the traditional ruler, and titled holders seated on well-decorated horses holding spears, which signifies the Shehu El-kanemi’s bravery and royalty.
The durbar has witnessed the attendance of Kanuri-speaking people from within Nigeria and the neighbouring countries of Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Central Africa, Ghana, and other African countries.
The special durbar was graced by the APC National Vice North, Ali Bukar Dalori, Senator representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, traditional rulers within and outside Nigeria, as well as other top government officials from 19 states in Northern Nigeria.
The Special Durbar also witnessed a spectacular royal parade of district heads and their followers who are under the Borno Emirate Council on horses, displaying colourful culture at its best to the admiration of the visitors.
