Gombe State Commissioner of Works, Housing and Transportation, Engr. Usman Maijama’a Kallamu has commended members of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) on their contribution to the development of the country.
The Commissioner made the commendation when the EXCO members and Members of the Institute, Gombe State Chapter paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation.
Speaking on instances of building collapse in the country, the Commissioner charged the members of the Institute to be firm and more professional when enforcing building rules even at the loss of personal income as this will garner for the builders more credibility and acceptability.
He said, “As an institution, your code of conduct should make your members decide if a building shouldn’t be built based on faulty design or faulty material or faulty location.”
He also said, “Let your members say they are not going to participate. I think if you can do that, you will reach a certain level whereby people will have no option but to believe in you”.
Usman Kallamu also charged the builders to consider other factors than maximizing returns on investment when building structures. He said the comfort and wellbeing of residents needed to be taken into consideration when building
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) Gombe State Chapter, Bldr. Abdulrashid Abubakar said March 13 every year has been set aside as Builders’ Day nationwide, which is an avenue for sensitisation campaigns against substandard building construction.
He further stated that this year’s theme is “The Role of Builders in Sustainable Housing Delivery”.
The Chairman who was represented by the Vice Chairman of the Institute, Bldr. Mohammed B. Mohammed said professional builders must take their rightful place in the building production process and strive to meet the expectations of the Nigerian people in the constant and successful delivery of quality, affordable, safe, and durable buildings.
He appreciated Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for infrastructural development he is doing in the state and for appointing a professional engineer as commissioner of Works, Housing, and Transportation, he congratulated the Commissioner for a well-deserved appointment.
