As part of efforts to encourage citizens’ participation in development at the grassroots level, the Michika local government area of Adamawa state has organised a maiden town hall meeting of stakeholders on its 2024 budget proposal
The meeting was put together by the Adamawa State Planning Commission in conjunction with the Nigerian and German governments to rebuild the Michika local government area after the insurgent attack at the Buba Marwa Civil Centre in Michika yesterday.
Mr Patrick Yunana, who represented the Adamawa State Planning Commission, said the Community Development Plan (CDP) was part of the state government’s plans to make governance and development an all-inclusive idea.
Nothing says that “the budget proposal presentation today at the local government level is the first in Nigeria,” stressing that CDP made it possible for the community members to give input on what they want the government to do for them.
The maiden town hall meeting with the theme ‘ Budget of Consolidation and Inclusion’ was supported by OXFAM, CRUDAN, and CPAD.
According to Mr Enoch Bamayi, the aim is to ensure that development is all-encompassing by creating community harmony and encouraging stakeholder participation at the unit level.
“Mika was chosen because they showed so much interest in making the people know what they are doing, particularly after the insurgency attack on the local government area, adding that other local government areas will follow.”.
He charged the LGA to improve on its internally generated revenue.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Michika local government area, Mr Amos Drambi, said his council decided to key into the CDP of the state government as it will afford his administration to display transparency and ensure that only people-oriented programmes are implemented because it is what they have chosen.
He commended Governor Ahamdu Finitri for his leadership style, which has made governance an all-inclusive idea at all levels in the state.
The Michika local government had a budget proposal of N6.89b for 2024, with internally generated revenue standing at just 2% of the total budget.
There were goodwill messages from all the political parties in Michika, CSOs, CAN, the Muslim Council, Women’s Society, PWD, IDPs, and trade unions.
