The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State command has arrested 319 suspects and seized 4.7 tonnes of illicit drugs from January to March 2024.
According to him,” In the past three months, from January to March 2024, the command has arrested 319 suspects, including 14 females, involved in the illicit drug trade.
“That the command also seized over 4 tons of various illicit substances, including 2,321.856kg of Cannabis Sativa, 2,446.461kg of psychotropic substances including the seizure of over 5 million pills of tramadol, and 1.9kg of other dangerous substances.”
The NDLEA Kano state commander Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, made this known in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer ( PRO)National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Kano State Command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, on Monday and made available to the press in Kano
He further disclosed that the command also successfully dislodged 39 drug joints that were serving as hubs for drug activities in the state.
He, however, added, “This operation has dealt a major blow to the drug trafficking network in Kano and will help disrupt the flow of illicit substances in the region.”
He said the suspects comprised of 14 females and 305 males.
Idris-Ahmad said the total drugs seized within the period under review is over four tonnes of illicit drugs which is made up of 2.3kg of cannabis sativa, and 2.4kg of psychotropic substances.
The commander pointed out that operatives of the agency also seized over five million pills of tramadol and 1.9kg of other dangerous substances.
According to him, “in the three months, the command secured 33 convictions of individuals involved in drug trafficking and other drug-related offences.
“We rehabilitated 26 drug addicts, processed 38 visa clearances and conducted 30 drug integrity tests for individuals and members of the state Emirate Council.”
Idris-Ahmad then assured residents of Kano state of adequate measures to ensure a peaceful and drug-free holiday during the forthcoming Eid-El-Fitr celebration.
“We will continue to work to dismantle drug trafficking networks, arrest perpetrators and prevent the spread of drug abuse in the state,” he said
The commander reiterated the command’s commitment to creating a drug-free society and ensuring the safety and well-being of Kano citizens.
He hinted that the “command is committed to maintaining law and order during this festive period and to prevent the spread of illicit drugs in the community.”
