According to a report, Thomas Tuchel is believed to harbor a strong interest in assuming the role of Manchester United manager this summer, especially if Erik ten Hag departs from the position.
In February, Bayern Munich confirmed Tuchel’s departure as head coach at the end of the 2023/24 season, citing a “sporting realignment.” Despite losing the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, who remain unbeaten in all competitions, Bayern has advanced to the Champions League semi-finals, maintaining Tuchel’s managerial acclaim.
The 50-year-old has been frequently linked with the United job in recent weeks, with reports suggesting his keenness to join Old Trafford if an opportunity arises.
Tuchel previously experienced success in England with Chelsea, leading the Blues to their second-ever Champions League title in 2021. His subsequent sacking in September 2022 and Chelsea’s decision to replace him with Graham Potter were viewed as controversial, with Chelsea finishing 12th that season.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag’s tenure at United faces scrutiny following their dismal 2023/24 campaign, which hit a nadir with a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. United have plummeted to eighth in the Premier League table with less than two weeks remaining in the season, risking their worst finish since 1990.
Interestingly, Ten Hag has been mooted as a potential successor to Tuchel at Bayern, having previously worked with their reserve team.
Additionally, the report from The Telegraph suggests that England manager Gareth Southgate is highly regarded by United’s new shareholders INEOS. He maintains a good relationship with their director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and has prior experience working with the club’s incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth.
