Today in Abuja, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will hold an unveiling ceremony to formally introduce Mr. Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.
Prominent figures expected at the event include Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Tinuke Watti, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.
Finidi George made the decision to forgo an opportunity to coach a second-tier team in Spain to return to Nigeria and take charge of Enyimba FC, two-time CAF Champions League winners. He led Enyimba FC to win the Nigeria elite division title in his second season and has left the club in contention to retain the title this season, with six matches remaining.
Upon his departure from Enyimba FC, the team remained in third place on the NPFL log, trailing table-toppers Enugu Rangers by four points and second-placed Remo Stars by three.
The 52-year-old previously served as an assistant to Portuguese coach José Peseiro for 20 months, during which the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final, narrowly missing out on a fourth African title in Cote d’Ivoire.
As a player, Finidi George earned 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level, winning the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver, and bronze medals, and participating in two FIFA World Cup finals.
His immediate challenge will be to secure maximum points in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in the coming weeks.
