Manchester United co-owners INEOS have disclosed ongoing discussions with UEFA regarding the club’s proposed participation in the upcoming Europa League season. This participation has come under scrutiny due to their connection with French club Nice.
Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League, Manchester United secured a Europa League spot by winning the FA Cup, defeating Manchester City 2-1 in the final at Wembley. Consequently, sixth-placed Chelsea will compete in the Conference League, while Newcastle, who finished seventh, will not participate in European competitions.
However, UEFA’s regulations on multi-club ownership conflict with INEOS’ stakes in both Manchester United and Nice, both of which qualified for the Europa League. These rules prohibit teams under the same management from competing in the same competition. As a result, United may face demotion to the Conference League.
INEOS is optimistic about resolving this issue, stating, “We are aware of the position of the two clubs and we are in direct dialogue with UEFA. We are convinced that we have a solution for next season in Europe.”
It’s anticipated that Manchester United will receive leniency as INEOS’ ownership stake in the club is under 30%, complying with UEFA regulations. INEOS acquired Nice in 2019, while their partial purchase of Manchester United was finalized in 2024.
Meanwhile, Manchester City Football Group’s ownership stake in La Liga side Girona raises similar concerns about Champions League participation. However, agreements with UEFA are expected to be reached to allow both teams’ participation.
UEFA has previously allowed European clubs under the Red Bull ownership umbrella, such as Leipzig and Salzburg, to compete in the same tournament, even facing each other in official competitions.
