Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has pointed fingers at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, alleging a lack of empathy in their conflict that led to his departure from the Emirates Stadium in 2022.
Aubameyang, who served as team captain during Arteta’s arrival and for two subsequent years, found himself at odds with the coach over a late return to training, resulting in him being stripped of the armband and excluded from the squad. Eventually, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer on the final day of the January transfer window.
Speaking to Colinterview, Aubameyang shared his side of the story, assuming partial responsibility while questioning Arteta’s handling of the situation.
Recalling the incident during the Covid period, Aubameyang explained his need to visit his mother, who had suffered a stroke months prior, for the holidays. Despite Arteta initially granting permission, Aubameyang faced a scolding upon his return, despite Arteta’s prior knowledge of the situation.
Despite hoping for resolution, Aubameyang realized Arteta wasn’t inclined to reconcile. He recounted being informed by the doctor that he was to be excluded from the squad and train separately. Additionally, Arteta revoked his captaincy.
Despite acknowledging his own accountability, Aubameyang expressed dismay at Arteta’s lack of understanding, ultimately leading to his departure after a month of solitary training.
