Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea’s striker, has indicated his openness to playing in Saudi Arabia, a year after declining a move to Al Hilal.
Lukaku, who has spent the last two years away from Stamford Bridge on loan at Inter Milan and with Mourinho at Roma, could be allowed to leave Chelsea for around £37 million this summer.
In an interview with Belgian broadcasters VTM, Lukaku discussed the possibility of a move this summer, emphasizing his autonomy in decision-making without an agent. He highlighted the importance of factors like his relationship with the coach in determining his choices, likening it to a relationship with a partner.
Regarding the potential move to Saudi Arabia, Lukaku expressed confidence in the increasing level of football there and the growing interest from players and fans alike. He acknowledged the need for infrastructure improvement but stressed that major European clubs are aware of the emerging football scene in Saudi Arabia.
Reflecting on his previous consideration of a move to Al-Hilal, Lukaku described the process as intense and filled with indecision.
Lukaku’s potential move is also influenced by financial factors, with Chelsea keen to reduce their wage bill and raise funds for new signings. However, with two years remaining on his Chelsea deal, the club is reluctant to approve another loan move and aims to recoup some of the transfer fee paid to Inter Milan in 2021.
